Prayers For Mary

Last week Mary had her six month well baby checkup and we discovered her head circumference has slipped down on the percentile chart. The doctor referred us for a CT scan at Children's Hospital to check to see if her skull was fusing together too early. Apparently this is something that isn't supposed to completely happen until age 2, and if it happens too early it can prevent the brain from growing properly and lead to all sorts of delays and issues. Treatment is generally a pretty invasive surgery performed on the baby's skull. While we were concerned about this potential diagnosis, we didn't quite know what to hope for because if the test came back completely normal, the other reason for slipping down on the charts could be that her brain was not growing properly, which would be attributable to a lot of scary conditions and issues.

The results came back today and Mary's frontal cranial bone is indeed fusing together too quickly. This is not quite as bad as multiple sutures fusing together, but it is still a concern both cosmetically (the middle of her forehead is protruding a bit) and also developmentally long term. The good news is it's not affecting her brain development at this time. We don't know at this time if she will need surgery or how invasive it would be due to only a single suture closing. We are being referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon at Children's and will hopefully know more in the next couple of weeks.
